Pre-writing

Pre-writing:

Before your children can write letters and numerals, they have to to be able to demonstrate that they:

Mechanics:

  • Can color within shape.
  • Can trace and copy basic lines and shapes: circle, triangle, square
  • Can follow simple mazes with isolated finger and then pencil.
  • Develops mature pencil grasp.

 

Activities:

Masking tape paths on floor to be driven on with small car.

Tracing paths in sand, shaving cream, finger paint, pudding.

String beds, place small pegs in a peg board, sprinkle rice to develop pincer grasp.

Using small broken crayons to foster pincer grasp.

 

Conventions:

Use left to right, top to bottom directionality to draw lines, shapes and eventualy letters.

Activities:

Follow simple dot to dots.

Use colored dots to show directionality for lines, shapes, and letters. Start at the green (go) dot, draw a line to the red (stop) dot.
