SPARK Science Program

For 7th and 8th grade students

SPARK: Idnetifying talent, opening doors

Connecting academically talented 7th and 8th graders with the ideas, resources, and tools to nurture their gifts in the sciences

Courses include:

FOCUS - June 24-July 21

The fundamental purpose of FOCUS is to provide stimulating, hands-on activities to illustrate concepts and skills. FOCUS strives to ignite intellectual curiosity, reinforce basic study skills, and teach students how to make connections to further their learning.  The program's goal is to prepare middle school students for the academic and social expectations for both high school and prep school.

FOCUS is designed for students who have completed grade 6 or 7.

FOCUS ELI- June 24-July 21

The purpose of FOCUS ELI is to develop and enhance English language skills through interactive reading, writing, and speaking activities.  Small classes and a supportive environment help students improve their written and oral ENGLISH skills.  FOCUS ELI courses have been carefully selected and designed to integrate skills essential for students to develop their ability in writing, speaking, listening, and reading.  English placement is determined after testing on the first day of classes.

Participants must be non-native speakers of English who have studied the language at least two years in their home schools and who can converse in English.

CONNECT seeks to empower and encourage young women to achieve in math and science through hands-on activities and interactive learning experiences.  It is an intensive, four-week, integrated science and mathematics program for girls who have completed grades 6-8.  Small classes and a faculty-to-student ratio of approximately 1 to 5 create a challenging but supportive atmosphere for learning.

YOUNG WRITERS WORKSHOP     Session I~ June 24-July 6 ;  Session II~ July 8-July 20

The Young Writers Workshop is an opportunity for students to learn skills that will help them to enjoy writing, to have success as writers, and to discover the pleasures and opportunities that skill as a writer can bring them.  The two weeks can make a real difference in a young writer's progress, making the program an exciting opportunity for the students.

This popular program offers students who have completed grades 6-8 experience in exploring, improving, and gaining confidence in their skills both as critical and creative writers.

BEGINNING WRITERS WORKSHOP     Session I~ June 24-July 6 ;  Session II~ July 8-July 20

Beginning Writers Workshop seeks to develop and build skills for effective communication through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Interactive assignments, fun, camaraderie, peer support and individual conferences are integral teaching strategies in this program.  Students must have completed grades 5 or 6.

Cyber Launch Pad

The Summer Place for Learning, Typing, Word Processing and Programming plus Remediation in Reading, Thinking, Math, Spelling, Writing/Word Processing, Study and Organizational Skills.

Specializing in LEARNING DISABILITIES

two, three, or four weeks - 8:30 am to 12:30 pm

Cyber Launch Pad (formerly Compter Creatives Camp.) Summer fun for children ages 7 to 12! Half days for four weeks in July. Come for two or more weeks. Participants download CyberSlate onto their home computers prior to the sessions. Parents and children learn how to use CyberSlate to practice every day at home, as well as in the daily classes. The daily program is a fast-paced combination of learning keyboarding, word processing, and programming, and remedial sessions in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
