Ms. Osterman began her teaching career with DCPS as a Title One
Mathematics Resource Teacher. She then spent five years teaching
first grade. After marriage and a move to Tokyo, Japan, Ms. Osterman
taught fifth grade at The American School in Japan.
A return to the United States brought the arrival of her own children
and Ms. Osterman left formal employment to raise her children. She
supported their educational process through volunteer teaching and
PTA involvement. After several moves which included living in
Cambridge, Massachusets and San Jose, California, Ms. Osterman
returned to Washington, DC. Ms Osterman has been at Janney since her return
to DC.
At Janney she has taught a multi-age classroom at the first and second grade
level, a multi-age classroom at the fourth and fifth grade level, fourth
grade and sixth grade. Teaching a three year loop of fourth, fifth, and
sixth grade was her greatest experience in teaching. Following the loop
she spent another year as a sixth grade teacher at Janney before taking a
year off to travel with her husband. From 2002 to 2008 Ms. Osterman taught
fourth grade. This year will be her second year teaching fifth grade.
Each student will feel safe and be encouraged to express their ideas and
take risks in learning. Each student will support one another
during struggle and will celebrate each others accomplishments. Each child
will know they are an
essential member of the classroom.
