CIVIL WAR COMES TO LIFE
1861-1865
October 27, 2007
You are about to bring the Civil War to LIFE!!
As we read and explore the events of the Civil War 1861-1865, pick a person
you wish to learn more about. This person must be a true historical figure –
no fictional characters. Research your chosen historical person and prepare
a 3 to 5 minute FIRST PERSON speech about your person’s life history. What
major contribution did your person make to the events of the Civil War? Did
they invent something, serve in the war, work as an abolitionist or give
another major contribution?
On Friday, November 14, you are required to come in some type of costume
from the time period that is appropriate for your historical person and give
a first person speech describing your historical person. Costumes could be
as simple as a paper hat or as elaborate as wigs and dresses. But some
effort must be made with regards to showing what your person may have looked
like or used during the 1800’s. Please do not bring in any weapons – real or
toy. If you character needs a gun or sword, please make it out of cardboard
or paper.
Have fun with this project.

You Child has MATH homework. Trust me. There is some page that must be
turned in or scanned in tomorrow morning when they walk in the door.

One of our most common assignments is to write a rough draft or complete a
piece for publication based on a lesson we are working on during Writer's
Workshop. I will give students a rubric to follow as a writing tool and to
let them know my expectations on the assignment. Ask your child if they are
currently working on any writing assignments. They love to share their work
with family.

EVERY WEEK:
Homework assignments are generally based on our content area for the week.
BUT SPELLING/VOCABULARY assignments are given every week.
CHECK THE LINK CALLED "SPELLING / VOCABULARY" FOR OUR WEEKLY WORDS
A Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle is due on Thursday. This is the ONLY spelling
homework for the week. STUDY SPELLING and DEFINITIONS for Friday's test.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Many assignments may be given throughout the day that have not been
recorded on our website. Students must keep up with the Daily Planners and
record the assignments. These are fifth graders!! Keeping up with homework
is a student's responsibility now not teacher's or parent's.
Don't worry, you kids can handle it!!!!

CONDUCT GRADES: Each week is worth 20 points- 4 for each day. Those points
are multiply by 5 for a weekly conduct average. Points may be lost for
excessive talking, jumping up out of seat, being rude to an adult or a
fellow classmate. Serious conduct violations, which break the well known
rules of the school, will result in an office referral.
For EXAMPLE : Say a child looses one point on Monday. This would mean that
child has 19 points for the week. Mathematically, 19 x 5 = 95% conduct grade
for the week. Every nine weeks, I’ll average those nine percentages for
the report conduct grade. If there are major problems, I will contact
parents immediately.

EACH WEEK'S HOMEWORK INCLUDES:
READ READ READ READ READ READ READ
READING IS YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS IN FIFTH GRADE! Everyone has a personal
Accelerated Reader GOAL. Each child will know how many points are needed
weekly in order to make the 9-week goal. Keep striving towards that goal.
