Our Media Center Mission Statement.

Our Timber Ridge mission is to be a positive place for learning
where
children and adults grow in knowledge, skills, and respect. The
mission of
our media program is to facilitate collaboration with classes to
enhance
standards-based learning throughout the school and to encourage
students to
become life-long learners and readers.

How does the Media Center work towards achieving this mission?

The Mary K. Widener Media Center welcomes students, staff, and
parents to
explore and enjoy our resources, which have been selected to
support and
enhance the curriculum offered at Timber Ridge. The Media Center
houses a
collection of both print and non-print materials and provides
access to the
Internet.

Throughout the school year, students receive guidance and
instruction to
enable them to find and retrieve information from both print and
non-print
sources, including our Cobb Virtual Library. Students are
introduced to both
fiction and non-fiction books to enrich their learning experinece
and their
appreciation of different genres of literature. The Media Center
staff also
strives to provide technical guidance and support for staff and
students as
they explore and research the world of information through
technology.

The Media Center Staff.....

We begin by mentioning our parent volunteers who are so very
important to the
operation of the Media Center, assisting daily with the
circulation and
processing of books and other materials. Volunteers are
organized by a PTA
chairperson. Recognition to our many parent volunteers is
important because
they make our Media Center such a pleasant place to visit!!
Working with
students to check-in and check-out thousands of books each year
and then
shelving these items is a huge job. The hours donate by our
volunteers
contribute so very much to the operation of our Media Center.

The Media Center staff includes Kathie Parks and Cindy Farrant.

Kathie Parks grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, and came to Georgia
in 1970 to
attend UGA. After completing graduate school at UK in 1975, Ms.
Parks began
her career as the librarian in a Business College in SC. Her
degree as a
Children's Librarian brought her into elementary school media
centers where
she enjoyed 5 years BC {before children}. In 1984, Ms. Parks
moved to
Marietta. In 2000, Ms. Parks accepted the position of Media
Specialist at
Timber Ridge Elementary.

Cindy Farrant was born in upstate New York. Ms. Farrant attended
college in
Johnstown, NY. She has lived in Marietta with her family for the
past 10
years, moving here from New Hampshire. Ms. Farrant has worked in
the Media
Center since 1998. She was voted by the Timber Ridge faculty to
be the 2006-
2007 School Professional, an honor she certainly deserves.

A bit of history.....

The Media Center at Timber Ridge Elementary was given the name of
Mary K.

occasion of
