Here are some ideas to focus on when asking your child "What did you do at
school this week?"
Week of 11/2/09 - 11/6/09
This week...
*Ms. Marney helped us practice writing our letter of the week "Nn". Can your
child tell you Ms. Marney's letter poems?
*We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase "Nn" on hand writing lines.
*During Animated Literacy we practiced drawing "Nn" pictures, we used letters
to make words, and we used our words to label our pictures. Early finishers
wrote sentences with "n" words on the back of their paper- GREAT WORK!
*We practiced writing our focus words: no and not. We also reviewed all of
our words that we have been learning.
*We continued to talk about our good writer rules. Remind your child: A
GOOD WRITER... uses finger spaces between words, listens for letter sounds,
uses an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence, and uses a sentence
stopper at the end of a sentence.
*We began talking about 3D shapes like the cone, the sphere, and the cube.
*We completed a "sentence scramble" for the letter N. We cut apart sentences
and then glued the words back down in order. Then we practiced reading the
sentences.
*We created a scene using different shapes, like triangle, rectangles,
squares, and circles.
*We read a story about the first Thanksgiving. We filled in the blanks in a
story to help us remember some important details. Can you read this story
with your child?
*We completed a word sort, but this time we sorted by beginning sounds. The
cards were sent home this week. Can you practice sorting beginning sounds at
home?
*We practiced making a model to show a number. We read our numbers alound and
glued the correct number of popcorn pieces to the correct box.
*We visited the science lab and continued talking about 3D shapes. How can an
object move? -Roll, slide, zig-zag.
*We used strips of paper to weave a Native American "blanket". We worked on
fine motor skills to complete this porject (Cutting, weaving under and over).
*We have been working with the penny and the nickel everyday on our calendar.
Can your child tell you how much a penny is worth? Nickel? How many pennies
do you need to make a fair trade with a nickel? Get ready- we are about to
introduce the dime! Can your child help you count the change in your
pocket/in your wallet/stuck between the couch cushions?
