Parents and Students, Welcome! We will be reviewing skills from kindergarten for 1 more week. Thank you to all of the parents who have come in to help while I am assessing! You have made things so much easier! We have begun the Accelerated Reader program in our room already! The kids have time every day to practice their reading and comprehension skills by reading books that are just right for their individual reading level. You may also read books at home and take a test on it at school. I sent a letter home explaining the AR program but if you have questions, please contact me. *IMPORTANT DATE!* I will be giving a Make It/Take It Reading workshop on Septemeber 10th at 7:00 in our cafeteria. I will be discussing and demonstrating manipulatives that you can use at home to improve reading skills from the alphabetic principle to comprehension. Then you will have a chance to make the manipulatives that suite your child's needs. We will also watch a portion of Dr. Rick Lavoie's video "How Difficult Can This Be?" This was a huge hit last year and I received many requests to do this again. Also, Mrs. Pat Hammons, our Reading Clubhouse teacher, will present her parent orientation right before our workshop and will stay to help with the Reading Workshop. Look for sign ups to come home soon. I hope to see you there!
Please continue to practice reading your kindergarten sight words. September 8th we will begin our first grade vocabulary and spelling words! I want you to read a book every day, too! Don't forget to have your child complete one of the activities to the left and email it to me for a prize!

A little about Mrs. Dennis: I am excited to be earning my Gifted and Talented license this year from Ball State University. I have a Master's degree in Mild/Moderate Disabilities so these classes will help me to see the other end of the learning spectrum. I earned my National Board Certification in Early/Middle Literacy:Reading and Language Arts in November 2007. WOOHOO!
APOLOGY TO NONE When I am introduced as a teacher, I am usually asked what I teach. When I say, "first grade", I generally hear a very flat "oh". I have never been certain whether it is an expression of pity, sympathy, disgust, or perhaps disinterest. Always, I wish I had the time to explain to them like this: YES, I teach first grade. WHERE ELSE would a handsome young man put his arms around me and ask "Do you know that I'll always remember and love you?" WHERE ELSE could I tie so many hair ribbons and belts and daily get to see a style show of pretty dresses and shirts? WHERE ELSE could I walk up and down aisles and have little warm hands reach out to me? WHERE ELSE could I have the privilege of wiggling loose teeth and receive the promise that I may pull them when they are loose enough and sometimes I do. WHERE ELSE would I eat a spoiled piece of candy from a grimy little hand and not become ill? (I have to eat it because he watches me to see that I do!) WHERE ELSE would the future look so bright as it does amid an energetic group to whom nothing is impossible? WHERE ELSE could I guide the first letter formations of a chubby little hand that may some day write a book or an important document? WHERE ELSE could I forget my own aches and pains because of so many cut fingers, scratched knees, bumped heads and broken hearts that need care? WHERE ELSE could I forget cares and even "the state of the nation" because Stevie isn't grasping Reading as he should and other methods must be tried? WHERE ELSE would my mind have to stay so young as with a group whose attention span is so short that I must always keep a "bag of tricks" up my sleeve? WHERE ELSE could I feel so close to my MAKER as I do each year when, because of something I've done, little children learn to read? YES, I teach first grade, Mr. and Mrs. America, and I LOVE IT! -Author Unknown
