Update November 4, 2009
We finished our historical fiction novel study. As a final activity the students identified the big idea and
themes in the novels.
Our focus in reading for the next few weeks will be related to reading non-fiction texts, We will
continue to identify the organizational text structure. The students will also be determining importance
and writing summaries. By using text features and text structure we are increasing comprehension.
We will be working on reading strategies to use when reading informational text. These strategies will
be used in reading class as well as science and social studies. Mr. Leffler and I are planning together to
best support the students while developing comprehension skills. We want student to realize that the
strategies they learn in reading should be used while reading the science and social studies text books.
There will be overlap of content between the classes.
