Curriculum
Mathematics: Harcourt Corp.
    With Harcourt Math, the children will develop an understanding of 
mathematics and acquire more knowledge and skills.  Some of the areas that we 
will focus on are: place value, addition , subtraction, multiplication , 
money, time, decimals, and measurement.  The third graders will strengthen
their math computation by utilizing Mastering Math Facts.

Spelling: VoWac
   On every Monday your child will be required to bring home a Spelling Word 
list. On Tuesday they will bring home high risk words. On every Thursday a 
test will be given over all of these words.  On Fridays they will take a 
paragraph dictation test.  They may also write any spelling words from the day
before.  It is their responsibility to remember their misspelled words.

Phonics: VoWac
    This phonic program provides instruction in word pronunciation and 
strategies that are needed to figure out new words.  

Handwriting: Zaner-Bloser
   This cursive program teach the correct letter formation for third grade 
handwriting.  Our goal is to use cursive writing in the majority of our work 
by the end of the school year.

Religion: RCL Benziger
  Through the Faith First series the students will come to know about the most
important models of Catholic faith: saints.  They will be able to witness
God's presence in our world and make good moral decisions about their daily
lives.  Faith First will help enrich the lives of the students.  It will lead
them to a deeper faith in Christ.  

The students will be involved in making hats for premature babies, praying for
the parish families, and making cards for the men at the Guardian Angel home.  
  
  In addition, we will use the Benziger Family Life program.  It is a 
complete and comprehensive catholic family life program.  It helps to 
strenghten the values taught both at home and school.  It preserves 
traditions and helps prepare students to meet the challenges of the future.

Social Studies: Michigan   Macmillan  McGraw-Hill
  Our focus will be on Michigan history.  The third graders will embark on a
journey through the history of Michigan.  They will learn about the first
people of Michigan, its growth, conflicts, natural resources and government. 
They willtake a field trip to the state capital and museum.  

English: Houghton Mifflin
  The language arts program involves listening, reading , writing, speaking, 
thinking and language study.  The third graders will be guided through the 
five steps writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading and 
publishing. It is a supplemental program used to reinforce skills taught in
the reading program.

Reading: Houghton Mifflin
  Houghton Mifflin believes that every child deserves to discover the joy of 
reading and experience the thrill of success.  Students will be inspired to 
become successful readers and writers.  The stories will offer a wide variety 
of content for everyone to enjoy.
  
Science:  Scott-Foresman
   The third graders will have extensive opportunities to make science 
rewarding and relevant.  The will cover three major topics: Life Science, 
Physical Science, and Earth Science. We will work on scientific processes too.
Experiments  will be done throughout the school year.  Your child may be asked
to bring some supplies from home for a specific experiment.
