Lincoln R

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the president of the U.S. during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.  The Civil War was a fight between the north and the south of the United States.  One main reason for the war was to fight slavery.  Slavery means buying and selling people.  In 1863 Lincoln wrote a government document called the Emancipation Proclamation.  This document freed many slaves.  Five days after the war ended a man (John Wilkes Booth) shot Lincoln.  After Lincoln died the U.S. congress passed laws that made all slaves free.
