On July 4, 1776 the United States became a new country.  The leaders of that country wrote a new plan of government with new laws.  They called this plan “the Constitution. 

 

In the Constitution they wrote about the government.  They said the new government would have 3 branches (parts).

 

• Legislative branch = Congress
• Executive branch = the President, the Vice President and the Cabinet
• Judicial branch = the Supreme Court

 

They wrote that they wanted a fair court system, good living conditions and freedom for all people.  So they wrote about people’s rights in the “Bill of Rights”.  The Bill of Rights says that all people in the U.S. should have.

 

• Freedom of speech
• Freedom of religion
• Freedom of assembly
