| WordMasters is a national program designed to expand vocabulary knowledge.
All students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades receive a word list three times a
year in their Friday folders. They have about three weeks to study the
lists and then will take a 30 minute test during the school day. The top
ten scores at each grade level will be considered the "team" from St.
Ambrose and will be submitted to the national office. Scores will be
compared with other competing schools and results will be sent back to St.
Ambrose.
**Remember that in offering WordMasters, St. Ambrose is providing an
opportunity for challenging vocabulary study but is not requiring vocabulary
homework. Some students may have the interest and the time to be actively
involved with this program - others may not and may simply choose to take
the test without home preparation. Each student's level of involvement may
vary throughout the year as well, depending upon participation in other
activities. The test scores do not affect classroom grades; they actually
are seen only by the Enrichment Office and WordMasters organization, not the
classroom teachers. Other than the top test scores at each grade level,
scores will not be shared or returned to students.
St. Ambrose teams did well in the first and second meets, all scoring in the
top 50% of
the national competition.
The word lists for the third meet have been sent home and the tests on those
lists will take place between April 14th and 22nd (exact times to be
announced by classroom teachers).
After school drill sessions in preparation for those tests will be held on
the following days for interested students:
3rd gr. - Wed., April 9, 8:15 am
4th gr. - Tues., April 8, 3:45 - 4:30
5th gr. - Thurs., April 10, 3:45 - 4:30
To sign up, phone Mrs. Hoversten, 768-3052, at least two days ahead of the
drill. PLease leave a message with student name, grade, day and time of
drill. A list will be posted outside of room 110 with the names of
registered students. Students may check this list to make sure their message
was received. Only students who have reserved a spot may attend the drills
since it is necessary to propare materials for participants ahead of time.
