WordMasters is a national program designed to expand vocabulary knowledge and
critical thinking skills. All students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades receive a
word list three times a year in their Friday folders. They have about three
weeks to study the lists and then will take a 30 minute test during the
school day. To perform well on the tests, students must not only have a good
understanding of the word meanings, but be able to demonstrate an
understanding of the connections between words by completing appropriate
analogies. The top ten scores at each grade level will be considered
the "team" from St. Ambrose and will be submitted to the national office.
Scores will be compared with other competing schools and results will be sent
back to St. Ambrose. The program is an excellent option for students who
demonstrate the need for additional academic challenge.
**Remember that in offering WordMasters, St. Ambrose is providing an
opportunity for challenging vocabulary study but is not requiring vocabulary
homework. Some students may have the interest and the time to be actively
involved with this program - others may not and may simply choose to take
the test without home preparation. Each student's level of involvement may
vary throughout the year as well, depending upon participation in other
activities. The test scores do not affect classroom grades; they actually are
seen only by the Enrichment Office and WordMasters organization, not the
classroom teachers. Other than the top test scores at each grade level,
scores will not be shared or returned to students.
