The goal of the Junior Great Books program is to expose children to great
pieces of literature and encourage appreciation of the works through active
discussion. At St. Ambrose there are two distinct Great Books programs.
In 1st grade, all students experience the activity during the regular school
day; parent volunteers come with prepared lesson plans and read the story to
their assigned group (4 students), discuss it briefly, and guide the
children through a related art or acting activity.
Students in grades 2 through 5 have the option to sign up for a Great Books
group which meets in the morning before school begins. These discussion
groups meet once a week for six weeks during Oct./Nov. and again during
Feb./Mar.
