I have taught music for nineteen years in grades pre-k through high school.
This is my seventh year at Codington. I love teaching children to
sing, move, and play instruments and I cannot imagine doing anything else.
I am a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Music in
Music Education. I have started classes for my Masters of Music Education
Degree from East Carolina University and I should finish in 2010. I received
my National Boards Certification in November 2007.
The second nine weeks was full of many experiences in music class and in
chorus. Fourth grader Kiera O'Reilly represented Codington at the North
Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus in Winston-Salem, NC in November. She was
one of nine students from New Hanover County to participate.
Third grade students began a study of solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti,
do) to leatrnhow to read music. This unit will contiue for the remainder of
the year. Fourth and fifth grade students will also study music reading
skills.
The first and second grade students will be attending the Pied Piper field
trip to Thalian Hall on January 26th to see the musical "Bugs Story." They
are learning the music to sing along with the cast memebers in music class.
All students are continuing to learn note names, rhythm values, and melodic
direction. Friday classes are learning keyboard skills on the piano
keyboards.
Two visiting artist groups will be visiting Codington on March. PTA has
sponsored an opera based on the music of Mozart and tells a classic fairy
tale. Third grade classes will see a performance about the music of Haydn
called "Papa Haydn." These will be great performances for our students.
The mission for the Codington music program and New Hanover County Schools'
is to provide a quality arts education for all students and to instill the
desire to be life-long participants in the arts.
