How is Math Prime different than regular math?

This class moves at a quicker pace than regular math. While we use the same
text and are based on the same curriculum, we do stray from the text to
provide supplemental and enrichment instruction.

Does my child deserve to be in it? How did he/she get in?

Placement in to Math Prime is based on a number of items. A matrix is
created that contains scores from NJ ASK, InView, the Math Prime Placement
test and the End of Year Math Test as well as teacher recommendation. When
a child is placed in the program, they deserve it, and we feel confident
that they have the ability to succeed.

What if my child struggles?

If your child routinely struggles with homework please let me know. You can
contact me directly, or have your child talk to me. The best way to get
help is to ask questions in class. Make use of the class time. If your
child is too embarassed to ask in front of the class, they can come up to me
at the beginning or end of class, or send me an email.

I am available by request after school. I do not automatically stay, or
have a scheduled day every week. If a student asks me to stay, barring any
conflicts, I am generally available.

Will my child be in Algebra next year?

Every year we re-screen all students. Being in Math Prime in 6th grade does
not guarantee placement in to 7th grade Algebra. Again, standardized test
and placement test scores will be used along with class performance and
teacher recommendation. Of the 5 sections of Math Prime in 6th grade, there
are usually 3 sections of Algebra in 7th grade.
