Spelling Activities

1)           Word Puzzle           

Create either a crossword puzzle or a word search using all 20 of your spelling words.  You may use Puzzlemaker.com or create your own.  Be neat!  Give clear clues for across and down on crossword puzzles.  Provide an answer key.

2)          Word Art                 

Write your words in shapes.  Put all of the shapes together to make a picture.

3)       Friendly Letter        

Use this week's spelling words and write a letter to a friend or relative.  Use at least 12 of words and underline them.

4)            Poems       

Choose two spelling words that you wish to use for your poems.  Write one poem with the first word and another poem with the second word.  It can be any type of poetry that you like (acrostic, couplet, etc).

5)         Spelling Game         

Design a Spelling game to play with your fiends.  It can be a board game, a card game, a guessing game, or some other idea.

6)  Spelling Test Sentences

Design and write a fifth grade sentence for each of your spelling words.  I will pick the best sentences to read to the class during the final spelling test.  Underline the words.

7)    Hidden Treasures 

Draw and color a picture.  "Hide" all of your spelling words in the picture.  Please do not color over the words or use a marker or sharpie to make the words stand out.

8)        Alliteration                  Make sentences using 10 of your spelling words, in which every word begins with the same letter.  Some sentence will be tongue twisters.  Underline the spelling words.               

Example:  angry     Angry ants are always after Andy's arm.

9)        Photo Captions       

Choose 4 pictures from a magazine that you would like to write about.  Then write a sentence or two about the pictures.  Be sure to use at least 10 of your spelling words and underline them.          

10)        Add Them Up       

Assign each letter of the alphabet a number, starting with A=!, B=2, until  Z=26.  Write each spelling word and then re-write the word with numbers.  Finally, add up the numbers to give each word a sum.  Example:  c  a   t =  24   

3+1+20 = 24

11)          Work of Art        

On a piece of white paper, creatively write all of your spelling words in different forms.   You may want to write one word in bubble letters, another in block manuscript, and another in cursive letters.   Cover the entire piece of paper and be creative!

12)       Pickle Mania           Write a story using all 12 of your spelling words.  Each time you come to one of your spelling words, write the words "pickle mania" instead of the word.  Underline "pickle mania" every time you use it.  See if the class can insert the correct spelling words.  Provide an answer key.
