Programs

Students at Beekman Elementary School may receive speech-language services through a variety of programs.

* Speech Improvement Program

The Speech Improvement Program was designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The Speech Improvement Program provides articulation therapy (therapy to improve a student's pronunciation of sounds) and/or language therapy (activities to strengthen a student's ability to comprehend auditory information, improve vocabulary skills and oral and written narratives). Students are enrolled in the Speech Improvement Program based upon poor performance on articulation sceenings and/or language assessments as well as teacher referrals. The Speech Improvement Program meets one to two times weekly for thirty minutes in a small group setting.

* Special Education Services

Students may receive speech-language therapy as part of their special education program. A student who is enrolled in the Special Education Program has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). A student's IEP has individualized goals to address a student's particular needs in the area of articulation and/or language therapy. Frequency of therapy is based upon speech and language assessments.
