My child has gotten detentions over chewing gum. Why is this important?

No gum chewing is a SCHOOL RULE! Students are not permitted to chew gum on
school grounds. Unfortunately, discarded gum can be found under desks,
chairs, and on equipment. Often, students will complain that clothes were
ruined because they sat on used gum. Each year, it takes quite a bit of time
to remove gum from EVERYWHERE! Just think of all the useful things that
could be accomplished if not for gum?
Also, if a teacher asks a student to remove gum and the student refuses, it
is defiant and insubordinate.
