8th Grade Religion

Reminder: Saint reports and Confirmation forms are due Monday!
 
 
We will be continue working on Chapter 6.  The notes are below. The students will also plan a prayer experience for their buddies.

Grade 8 Chapter 6 Religion

 

6th Commandment: Thou shall not steal.

 

Stealing- any action that unjustly takes away property or rights of others.

 

* based on justice – respecting the rights of others and giving them what is rightfully theirs.

 

Ways we can give people things that are rightfully theirs:

- being stewards of God’s creation

- caring for things that belong to us; respecting what belongs to others

- not taking things that aren’t ours

 

 

 

 

8th Commandment: Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor

 

What does 8th commandment teach?

- the need for truth

- that truth is the foundation of positive human relationships.

 

8th commandment obliges us to:

- witness to truth of Jesus in all we say and do

- tell the truth

- respect privacy of others

-honor good names of others; do not harm reputations

 

Effects of lying:

- damages our own name

- lose respect for ourselves

- hurts other people

 

9th Commandment – Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s wife

We respect and protect the fidelity of marriage commitment.

covet -  to wrongly desire someone or something.

Temptation -  the attraction to choose sin

 

Temperance – the cardinal virtue which moderates the attraction of pleasures and helps us bring our desires into balance

 

Modesty – thinking, speaking, acting, and dressing in ways that show respect for ourselves and others.

 

Pure of heart – living in the love of God our Father, as Jesus the Son calls us to do, and allowing Holy Spirit to fill us with love.

 

10th Commandment – Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

 

* Obliges us to thank God for what we have, to work for what we need, and to help others to have what they need.

 

* We trust in God and know that his love is more important than money or success.

 

Greed- excessive desire to have or own things

 

Envy – feeling sad when someone else has the things we want for ourselves.

 

Poor in spirit – depend on God and make Him ore important than anyone or anything in our lives.
