Situated near the intersection of Oxford and Quebec Streets, in the former
Wolseley Barracks area of East London, Bishop Townshend Public School is a
small, community school. The students, staff, Parent Teacher
Association/School Council, and community volunteers are committed to a
quality education and preparing for the future.
William Alfred Townshend worked tirelessly to improve the quality of
education for all students. He was a mentor, a caring role model and an
understanding spokesperson for the citizens of London. He was a Bishop in the
Anglican Church for thirty years, and a devoted long-time Trustee in the
Board of Education. His ten children have all been involved in education,
either as educators or school trustees.
In 1958 Bishop Townshend Public School opened it's doors. It continues to
honour W. A. Townshend's dedication and commitment to the education of
London's children. Our school staff treat everyone as individuals, and
encourage people to strive for their very best. The teachers and support
staff also recognize the learning and play value of numerous sports, clubs
and activities. They offer a generous amount of their personal
time in order to provide our students with these advantages, and we thank
them for working well beyond the scope of their regular teaching
responsibilities.
