When are auditions for the HHS Jazz Ensemble?

Auditions  HHS Jazz Ensemble are held shortly after marching band season 
concludes  Rehearsals traditionally begin in late November or early December.

Who is eligible for membership in the ensemble?

All current HHS students are eligible for membership.  Each year the 
band's membership ranges from Freshman to Seniors.  You do not 
need to be a member of the band or orchestra program to audition for 
membership.

How many members are in the ensemble each year?

There are roughly 18 members in the HHS Jazz Ensemble each year.  
This includes 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, pianist, bassist, 
drummer,  and guitarist.  There may also alternates and "doublers" in 
the rhythm section.

What is the difference between member and alternate status in the ensemble?

Members are responsible to attend all rehearsals and performances 
throughout  the school year.  Alternates who did not successfully gain 
full membership into the ensemble attend fewer rehearsals and 
perform at fewer concerts.

What is the Jazz Combo?

The Jazz Combo is a select small group of players who are also in the 
Jazz Ensemble.   The Combo performs additional literature at various 
concerts and public appearances throughout the year.

What is the Lab Band?

The Lab Band is a second jazz ensemble, directed by Mr. Fein.   
This purpose of this band is to expose and educate students in jazz 
performance at an introductory and intermediate level.   Audition 
requirements will not be as strict and the rehearsal schedule will not be 
as frequent.  Some players in the big band will also be asked to study in 
the lab band as well.
