We were pleased to have welcomed Miss Melissa Jefferson to the third grade team in late October!
Miss Jefferson has been able to work with small groups, enabling students to work at their own pace of
learning. She will continue to support all three classrooms on a daily schedule.
In math, we will be wrapping up our unit “Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers”. We are asking
that parents continue to reinforce the mastery of addition and subtraction facts in the home setting.
Soon, students will begin our unit on linear measures and area. Look for your parent letter coming
home early this month.
It was great to see so many visitors during Community Visitation Week. Thank you for taking the
time from your busy schedules to join us. The students enjoyed presenting their wonderful bridges to
a variety of audiences. We have concluded our science unit on structures. Students took a virtual field
trip of local bridge--ask your child what they learned about the structures in their local community.
In Language Arts students are continuing “Making Connections Through Literacy”! Students are
enjoying reading our anthology, Discovering Courage. The children have been exploring how
characters discover bravery and courage, while making connections to other texts and their own lives.
Students continue to read their self-selected “just right” books and responding to the text in their
reading journals. In Writer’s Workshop, students have been busy filling their writer’s notebooks, and
acquiring a variety of writing strategies. Ask your child what it means to “show, not tell”.
Students will be completing a unit of study on geography, applying the map skills they have
acquired in Social Studies. We will be beginning a unit of study on Native Americans; tying this into
Early American settlement.
We have been given permission to continue to use of our Teacher Web Page; Mr. Wagner has paid
for the site license. Information, calendar events and current spelling lists can be found by accessing
this from the Seylar home page. This resource will be updated weekly.
