Chapter 5 – 2-Digit Addition with and without Regrouping

We are currently working in chapter 5 of the math text. Use the pages sent home to guide your work with your child.
It is very important that the children practice math facts to 12 or even 20. That means learning all addition and subtraction facts with answers up to 12 or 20 by heart. This will make the addition that we work on in this chapter much easier. If your child is using fingers to count out simple addition facts to 12, they will struggle with these concepts in chapter 5. Use flash cards and make a game of it. I sent home some ideas for you and have many more if you need them. Just ask! I am here to help you to work together with your child at home. Your support of our lessons helps to reinforce the concepts. Thank you! Remember to study facts for addition and subtraction with your child as often as you can! Here is a listing of the skills and concepts that will be presented in this chapter.
The students will be able to: Add tens using a hundred chart. Add 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Distinguish between important and unimportant information in a story problem. Draw a picture to solve word problems. Add 2-digit numbers in reverse order (turnaround facts) to check sums. Round the addends and re-add to check sums. Add money amounts...remember money signs. Add three 2-digit addends. Remember to study facts for addition and subtraction with your child as often as you can! It is very important that the children practice math facts to 12 or even 20.
