School Philosophy

St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish School was built in 1925, thirteen years after the church began as a mission church ministry to the large number of Italian immigrants coming into Philadelphia in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

The school was staffed by the Franciscan sisters from 1925 to 1951. In 1951, The Religious Teachers Filippini began their mission here at St. Nick’s. The Religious Teachers and the lay teachers of the school strive to keep alive St. Lucy Filippini's flame of faith, a wholesome fear of God and an appreciation of an educated life.

Today, the school welcomes all of our new immigrants from our parish and outside of the parish, both Catholics and non-Catholics.

St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish School embodies a philosophy influenced by the Gospel message, the example of St. Lucy Filippini, the patron saint of our religious teaching order and the inspiration of St. Augustine, the founder of the priests who serve this parish.

Our faculty strives to witness Christ’s message by incorporating into the academic areas the simplicity and dignity of Catholic Doctrine.  As a continuing process we develop the faith of our students through prayer, sacraments and a spiritual environment.

Our faculty acknowledges the individuality of each student’s learning style and developmental stage.  As educators our aim is to master the basic skills while encouraging every child to reach his/her highest level of achievement.

The home is the first school; therefore a strong and productive relationship between the home and school is vital.  Teachers and parents working together for a common goal act as a living model for students to emulate.  We, as committed teachers, are constantly aware that our students will learn to imitate us.  We are commissioned to teach the values that lead to a firm faith and a life related to the Good News of Salvation.

The Office of Catholic Education provides unifying guidelines in the subject areas which establish the principles and goals of our curriculum.  Our role, as faculty, is that of motivator, instructor, organizer and evaluator.  Teaching styles are as varied as the individuals who comprise our faculty, but the final goal is the same - excellence for our students.

As an integral part of education we employ all traditional means of evaluation as well as innovative assessment techniques requiring a rubric.  Subjectively we observe the student’s attitude, cooperation and effort, tempered with an understanding of the child’s ability.

Our faculty's message is to create an atmosphere of Christian love.  Our relationship with parents and students reflects our deep commitment to Christ’s teachings.  We strive to guide gently our students with Christ as our role model.  We endeavor to bear witness to the concept of team effort and encourage our students to do the same.

Our goal is to educate to the highest point possible and to prepare our students to be exceptional God fearing adults.
