What is the Accelerated Reader Program at Union ES?
Students read library books to practice their independent reading skills.
After they understand the story or facts in a book, they take an Accelerated
Reader test.
--------------------------------------
How many times should a student read the book before the test?
When a student first begins to read, they should read their boook two or
three times. It helps if an adult reads it with the student and asks
questions after
the reading.
--------------------------------------
What kinds of questions are on the test?
Questions are multiple choice. They often ask a question about a change in
the story. "What happened when Brad got a new bike?" They may ask how a
character felt. In first and second grade books the questions are often
taken directly from the words in the book. The questions test the students
recall of facts or events.
--------------------------------------
How many questions are there?
There are 5 or 10 questions on each test. Longer books have 10 questions.
--------------------------------------
When does a student first take an Accelerated Reader test?
When the classroom teacher recognizes that a student is becoming fluent in
reading, we add the student to the program. Generally it is sometime in
first grade.
--------------------------------------
How many Accelerated Reader books may they borrow from the library?
Students usually check out one Accelerated Reader book and another book that
isn't. However, they may take two Accelerated Reader books if they wish.
Every student in the program is to have at least one Accelerated Reader book
checked out from the library so they can keep practicing to read
independently.
--------------------------------------
How do I know what Accelerated Reader level my child is on?
Each Accelerated Reader (AR) book is labeled with a red dot and the level of
the book on the spine. The reading level is also on the inside front or
back cover of the book. AR reports are sent home with the report card each
six weeks. The report tells you what books your child took AR tests on and
the results.
--------------------------------------
What are Accelerated Reader points?
Students earn points based on the length of the book and the number of
questions they got right on the test. At the end of the year the student
can spend their AR points at the AR Store.
--------------------------------------
How can I help my child select AR books?
You can search the card catalog and click on the AR button. Put your
child's reading level in the Reader level window. Change the number
for "levels above" to 0. Make sure there is nothing in Subject or Author.
Click on Search button. You will see a list of all titles for that level.
You can also see if the book is in or out (available) at our Library.
--------------------------------------
My child is reading above grade level. How will the AR Program help?
Students who are reading above grade level are generally very interested in
reading as well as good readers. If a student tests well above grade level,
the student can read books within their AR range as determined by the STAR
test. This encourages students to read books they might not otherwise try.
A child might choose a nonfiction at the bottom of their range or an
exciting novel at the top of their range. Their interest in reading is key.
--------------------------------------
What if my child is not passing the AR tests?
The librarian and teacher monitor their progress and make adjustments. The
child might be moved to another level or someone may read with the child
before they take their test. Our goal is to help students succeed in
reading and enjoy it. With success they gain confidence and continue to
grow in their reading.
