WELCOME

WELCOME TO 6th GRADE MATH at Rollings Middle School of the Arts! We are
all looking forward to an exciting, eventful, exceptional school year. It is
a privilege to have each one of you in my class, and I look forward to
watching you grow mathematically in the days to come.
Now, let me introduce myself. I am Mrs. Kathryn Farmer. I have been
blessed as a teacher for 21 years, 16 of which have been with the Dorchester
District 2 Schools. I am a graduate of Clemson University and The Citadel
Graduate School. I have always had a passion for mathematics and the
challenges that are involved in most areas of this curriculum.
I am married to Mr. Dan Farmer, a former teacher at Flowertown Elementary.
He is currently the Assistant Principal at Reeves Elementary School. We
enjoy sharing curriculum ideas with each other, finding a tremendous
resource in one another. We have 2 precious children, Anna Claire (8) and
Ben (5). They add a HUGE amount of adventure to our family through
travelling, frequent trips to the beach, attending many different sporting
events, riding bikes together, family get-togethers, and MANY more.
I hope we will all get to know each other and the many varied interests we
all have. What a productive year it will be!

Here are some of the requirements I have for my students in 6th grade Math:

BE POSITIVE! BE PRODUCTIVE! BE PROFICIENT!

Expectations: I expect all assignments to be turned in on time, all rules
to be followed, and all students to try their best at ALL times. My goal as
a teacher is to create an atmosphere both challenging and comfortable.
Students will be encouraged to extend their thinking and problem-solving
abilities, to take risks and accept mistakes and failures as part of the
process of learning, and to share and express their ideas and conclusions as
part of class instruction.

Grade Distribution: The percentage destribution of grades are as follows...
Tests/Projects- 40%
Classwork/Quizzes- 35%
Homework- 15%
Journals- 10%

Homework: Students will have homework daily with the exception of Fridays
(although there may be some on occasion). Homework should only take about
20 minutes to complete each day. Homework will not be given on new
material, and students should use their notes and textbook to assist them.

Journal Entries: Students will be graded on their journal entries. I feel
it is important for students to communicate about mathematics in order to
fully comprehend the skills learned.

Quizzes/Tests: There are no unscheduled quizzes or tests. Students will
know about these in advance. For math, please make sure the students study
previous material a little each night. This way students do not have to
cram or relearn material the night before.

Tutoring: Students are encouraged to see me if they need extra help or to
complete make-up work. The scheduled tutoring day is Thursday from 3:30-4.
There will also be occasional lunch sessions before tests for students to
take advantage of this time.

Classroom Rules: These rules apply for all of your child's teachers.
Be safe, Be respectful, Be resourceful, and Be responsible

Consequences: Warning
               Think Time
               Detention and/or parent contact
               Office referral

Absences: It is important to be in class each day. If a child is absent,
it is THEIR responsibility to get the missed information from the day(s)
that is missed. The homework will be listed on the website and notes can be
copied when they return. Any worksheets can be picked up from the "absent
folder".

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
See you soon!
