Parents NewsFlash

5/29
Parents,
This will be our last newsflash! This group of freshman overall has been an outstanding group
in behavior and personality, thanks for all you have done!

Also, I found someone's cupcake holder and for the life of me I can't remember whose it is. So
if it's yours, email or give me a call or come by school tomorrow. I'll save it for you.

Have a great summer!

5/20 The structures to be covered on the Rat Practical have been posted under "worksheets &
Labs". Students must know parts, functions and how they compare to human systems. Students
NEED to study for this. It will be a test grade.

5/16-WOW! The the majority of my students blew the top off of the Biology Benchmark! Most of
the grades were A's and B's! Way to go!

Final Exam Reviews and Guides have been posted under "Worksheets & Labs". Feel free to downlaod
and give to your child early. For PAP, there is a written review and a review guide should time
run short. =)

5/13
Reminder..
1. Root Words Exam Wednesday/Thursday. Students need to study. Exam will only be given 30 mins.
2. Zoology Portfolio should be kept current. Checks of this for grades will be done without
warning periodically.

4/30
Many students did poorly on this past exam over Kingdoms, Plants & Microbes. Many of the
concepts are new and rely upon root word mastery. Please check your child's grade. If they
scored poorly, they need to study the root words and the topics of the exam. Flashcards are a
great tool. They will see this material again both in class and on their TAKS test. I know
it's nearing the end of the year and students are tiring and aren't motivated to study. But,
now is not the time to quit! Encourage your child to hang in there for the "final leg".

The science benchmark is Friday. Students MUST look over their notes before this test-we
discussed this in class...to refresh memories of material covered sometime ago. The test can
cover any material since Christmas. I have also told them to save all notes from class to
review for their TAKS a year from now. =)

4/25 (#2)
Please accept my apologies about your burned children! We are ALL burned, including myself
despite my yearlong preaching against it! (And our unit on Thymine Diamers) It was as
if there was a radiation leak or something b/c we all seemed to get burned all of a sudden in
the last hour. We did tell them to apply, apply, apply! Anyway, I apologize for this, but on
the flip side, the students could not have behaved any more perfectly. Thanks you for raising
such great kids. I feel blessed to be their teacher.

4/25
Parents, students need to bring gloves for dissections if they don't want to have to reuse the
one pair of gloves BISD provides. I strongly suggest students do bring more-they can go in on
one box with another student in their class if they like. We will be dissecting several things
and pretty much for the rest of the year, so they probably will NOT want to use the same gloves
over & over again. You can them at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, almost anywhere that has a medicine
section.

MANY KUDOS kudos to our parents that chaperoned yesterday; we hope you enjoyed the day! We
couldn't have done it without you! =)

4/21
Parents we need more chaperones for the field trip....!

4/14
Parents-do you have any old 2x4's and screen (like from an old window)? We would like to make
some sifters for our trip to the beach. They are simply square made of 2x4's with like window
screen stapled to the back.
Also...Be sure to check out the following:
*Field Trip to Quintanna 4/24 (We need volunteers)
 *Fungi Food Lab 16/17
*Students have received grade sheets in class almost every day for the past week-ask to see
one.

3/5
Hello Pirate Parents,
We are havign our next Unit Exam Monday & Tuesday of next week over Evolution, Natural
Selection, Mammals/Primates & Taxonomy. Please make sure students study the notes.

Also, we had sort of an experimental Pirates Fun Team Day today after TAKS, and the kids were
FANTASTIC! This is a great group of kids! We appreciate the perfect behavior today. =)

2/15
Parents,
TODAY is the LAST day of the six weeks and I still have many students with missing assignments
and unfinished exams. PLEASE check your child's grades online. My normal procedure is that
all
work is due in the week before the end of the six weeks. But I feel my hall duty limited
opportunities for students to come in. So, I took papers all the way through this week and I
told students I would stay late on Thurs. (yesterday) Only about 5 students came! I am staying
late again TODAY after school because TODAY is the absolute LAST days anything can be turned in
or completed. Please check your child's assignments online before emailing me. This will save
us
both a tremendous amount of time.

Thanks for your continued support! Have a great weekend.

2/4
Hello Parents,
*I now have duty again on B days, so I will not be available for tutoring on those days.
*If your child received a zero for the Binder Check, they may do an alternate assignment: a two
page report over the importance of organization and responsibility. The due is Friday (2/8).
*Students have been assigned a Mini-Genetics Project. It is due 2/18 and 2/19
*The next Unit Exam will be 2/12 and 2/13.
*Students will be going to the library 2/14 and 2/15 to begin a research paper on a genetic
disorder. This is a Major Project and will be a TEST grade for next six weeks. This will be the
only class day spent on the assignment. The due date is 3/10 and 3/11. Late projects will not
be
accepted.
*All notes, worksheets and labs have been updated.

1/28
*Students will receive grade sheets in class today & tomorrow.
*Inc Grades are NOT averaged in right now. However, if not made up within allowed time, they
become zeros.

Reminder-Genetics Unit Exam 1/23 (B-day) and 1/24 (A-day), except B3 (Reg. Bio I)

1/16/08
Hello Parents,
Please check to see if your child has brought or emailed a photo of someone in the family that
they resemble. We will use copies of the photos for an activity in class. The photos will be
returned unharmed. We need these by Friday (B day)/Monday(A day.

Website Updated, 1/11/08

Parents,
My Study Plan had the wrong exams on the wrong days. Be sure to go by the district schedule on
the BISD website. Sorry for any confusion.

12/14
I am still grading DNA projects, but otherwise, everything else has been graded. Please check
your child's grades online. No late work can be accepted for PAP except in the case of the
movie
GATTACA which can be rented at Blockbuster or watched ONLINE at Movielink.com. You must spell
it correctly, though to find it (GATTACA).

Students MUST study for the midterm. It is cummulative. This is a great group of kids. They
will need to spend some time studying for this exam. As always, thanks in advance for your
continued support this year!

12/10
Parents, the "What are we doing in Class" has been revides...fyi

12/3
Parents...We are participating in a practice evacuation tomorrow until about 11 am. We weren't
given much notice about this, so it is going to shift the sequence of instruction. I had also
already planned on being out to take my Mother for eye surgery. So, I recommend that students
wait until Weds. during tutorials to turn in the DNA project. I had to revise the Bio portion
of the team calendar. The updated version is now on the website. It has the plans up until we
get out for Christmas. Please take a moment to download and review it.
*Final Exams will be here before we know it. I've posted a Final Exam Study Plan to help
students organize the vast amounts of material into manageable portions.
*Worksheets and notes have been updated

11/27
Thanks to everyone who helped make our trip to HMNS a success! The students were excellent. The
website has been updated and new extra credit posted. Reminder-DNA projects are due 12-4/5.

11/16
PAP Parents...Students are bringing the latest root word quiz and corrections home to be
signed.
Most revealing is the first sentence on the corrections. Students were to write a sentence
telling what they felt contributed the most to their score on this quiz. A grade will be taken
on the corrections only if your signature is present. Root words are extremely important to
Biology and TAKS as know you know. Thanks for your continued support! Have a great Thanksgiving!

11/12 #2
We had so many changes to the Biology Calendar that I uploaded an updated one fyi. Also, there
is new extra credit.

11/12
WOW! Parents, the students overall did an awesome job on the Benchmark! I am soooo proud! Be
sure to check your child's grade out and give them kudos!

11/6
We will be taking the Biology Benchmark in class on Thursday/Friday of this week. I loaded a
Study Guide onto the website under "Worksheets and Labs". To prepare, students should go
through their binder and review notes, worksheets and labs to refresh their memory. There is no
other homework because of this....other than a good night's rest and breakfast. :)

11/2
*Not all students have turned in a Cell Model Project. This is a test grade....
*Assignments and Notes have been updated.
*Open House is Monday 6-7:30
*Biology Benchmark is 11/8-9...Students should study all notes we have taken so far this year.

10/29 Field Trip Reminder...All monies and forms are due 10/31.

10/25...You can access your child's grades online. Download the directions from teh "Pirate
Team Info" tab.

10/23 Parents,
Students will be given an marked index card to made a "cheat card" to use on the unit exam
which
is Thursday/Friday. Also, the Team Calendar says the Exam is over Cells, Transport and
Biochemistry. We have already tested over Biochem, so that will NOT be on the Exam. This was an
error on my part.

10/22
*Students are receiving grade sheets in class today & tomorrow.
*The Cell Crossword will be due Weds/Thurs of this week.
*Root Word extra credit is due today/tomorrow (22/23.
*All other extra credit will be accepted until this Friday 10/26.

10/18 I have much info to share tonight!

*The webpage has been updated; some helpful links too.
*The next major Exam will be on 10/25-26.
*All papers turned in so far have been graded.
*You can now access your child's grades yourself online.

10/17 Just a Reminder, Team Parent Meeeting Tonight at 5:00!

10/10/07 (#2)
Parents, we will have our Parent Team Meeting 10/17/07 @ 5:00 in the 9th Grade Commons.
Students
should have brought home an explanation letter, or you can download it from the Team tab on my
webpage. Also, we will not have a quiz on Thursday and Friday after all. I was very happy to
hear so many students talk of their parents sharing extra credit options from the email
yesterday! Hope to see everyone Wednesday.

10/10/07
PAP Parents,
Some studetns have asked for the nutritional info for the cafeteria food for inclustion in the
project. I've added that info under the "Worksheets & Labs" tab. Hope this helps!

10/9/07
New extra credit options have been added to the website and notes and assignments have
been updated. The last day extra credit can be turned in is 10/22 or 10/23. We are having
quizzes almost every day, so it's a good idea to make sure your child is looking over his/her
notes in between class periods.

10/2/07
All students in all classes have been given several grade sheets over the past week. They are
required to keep these in the "Grades" section of the binder in Biology. This is the grade that
will be on the report card, unless therre is an error on my part.
PAP students are to be keeping a food log for the project which is due on 10/11 (A day) and
10/12 (B day)

9/14/07
I am giving out grade sheets today & Monday, so be sure to ask your child to see it. These
are "pseudo" Progress Reports in that they are given out frequently from now on in class and
given the most current status of a student’s grade. Students should keep them ALL in the
Biology
grade section of their binder.

9/11/07
Unit I Exam is set for Thursday/Friday of this week. The Mentos Lab will be Weds/Thurs of this
week. Students will need their supplies by then.
PAP Students...will have a root word quiz on Thursday/Friday in addition to their unit exam
over the letters A-C.
FYI...a binder check will be coming up soon. (hint, hint)
As always, feel free to contact me anytime! :)
