About Homework

                         Brazoswood High School
                         Mathematics Department

Dear Parent,
		                                                   8/27/2007

I am looking forward to working with your student this year.
Mathematics is a logical, skill-building discipline that is enjoyable,
challenging, and rewarding when we work together – teacher, parent and
student.

Mathematics is not a spectator sport. There are many skills that
students must develop and practice daily. Mathematics requires action and
constant exercise. It is a fact that one will never become physically fit
while observing others working out, and one will never become mathematically
fit by watching me go through the mathematics exercises.

If your student has ever been on an athletic team or played a
musical instrument, you know that improvement comes only with practice. A
football coach who explains the game in a room without practicing each play
on the field over and over again cannot expect to have any success on Friday
night. The Buccaneer Band would have none of its success without hours of
practice outside of school. It is the same with mathematics. There are
skills which must be mastered before other skills can be taught. Mastery
comes through practice and practice takes the form of homework.

Mathematics homework assignments are essential to the success of
your student in this class. Students who do not practice math skills on
homework assignments rarely perform well on tests and quizzes and then
grades suffer. It is best to begin a responsible homework schedule with
your student when school starts and not wait until the first grade reports
come out.

Please help me by insuring that your student does his/her homework
each evening. Successful homework completion by the student is the best
insurance against poor grades and poor skill-building. I want your
student’s math experience in my class to be fun, not frustrating. By
working together - teacher, parent, and student – we can have a successful
year.

Best Regards,
