Assignment 2

What's in the News?

Read today's newspaper.

Summarize 3 articles.  Choose one from the news section, one from the sports section, and one from any other section.  Write the headline, and then write your summary.  End your summary by telling what you found interesting about the article.

Cut out the most interesting picture in today's paper and glue or staple it to your paper.  Critique the photo.  Tell what the photographer did right, and what you think the photographer could have done better, or what the photo editor should have done to make it a better print.

After learning about typography, choose one of the following assignments to complete.

Choice 1

Design an ad for your favorite restaurant in four different ways: formal, modern, casual, old-fashioned.  Look up the restaurant in the phone book to get the address and phone number.   Add some kind of appropriate clip art or photo to your ad.  Also, add some kind of advertising slogan to entice people to eat at your restaurant.  (for example, best burger for the buck)  The ad information and the art should be the same on each of your ads; only the type style should change.  You may make your ad full page, half page (2 on a page), or quarter page (4 on a page)  Be sure to add your name in small type with the caption "ad designer" to each one.

Choice 2

Make 4 collages.  Use a piece of printing paper to make each collage (8 1/2 X 11).  Use several magazines to get headlines and ad type to create your collages. You may also create type on the computer to use on the collages, but fill them mostly with type from magazines. Use Glue Stick to glue your type to the paper. Titles for the collages: Formal Type, Modern Type, Casual Type , Old-Fashioned Type.
