The Geologic Time Scale (Mr. Peters' Version)
Basalt (pahoehoe) from Hawaii. It is smooth, ropy, and shiny.
Paricutin, the Volcano That Grew Up in a Cornfield
Basalt from Mexico. Obsidian. Holes are filled with white minerals.
Mahogany obsidian. Black and brown colors show ocean and cotinental crust mixed together.
A Perfect Cinder Cone Volcano.
Volcanoes in Austin? Yes, these are basalt pebbles from Pilot Knob, a Cretaceous volcano (near the airport).
Mt. Puy, Fance. a 10th century monastery sits atop this old volcanic neck. (from Time-Life).
Rhyolite. A volcanic neck. Willow Mountain near Study Butte, Texas. Notice the columnar jointing.

Llanite. From Llano, Texas. A rhyolite porphyry. Has blue quartz and pink feldspar in a fine matrix.
Gabbro (Labradorite). Made of dark minerals, especially a beautiful iridescent feldspar
Granitization occurs when magma or melted rocks cool and crystallize. Note the chunk of old rock is still unmelted.
Granite comes in a wide variety of colors and textures.
B for Banded. Gneiss (metamorphic) shows its typical light and dark bands.
B. This piece of gneiss has almost completely melted to become granite.
NB. Pure marble from Marble, Colorado. Notice the sparkling, sugar crystal appearance.
Green quartzite.
Sedimentary rocks begin as sediments . These were deposited by the Rio Grande near Presidio, TX.
Breccia. Large angular rock fragments cemented with chalcedony, a waxy variety of quartz.
Conglomerate. Large pebbles and gravel cemented with iron. Arbuckle Mts, Oklahoma.
Shale concretion. Mud cracked and created openings Calcite filled in the cracks.
Limestone with fossils of crinoids on it. San Saba, TX.
Coal. This is a core from a mine in Alabama.
A Salt Palace; Grand Saline, Texas. The building is made of pure salt from a mine there.
Morton Salt is a primary contributor to the tourist industry in Grand Saline, TX.
