What are the course goals?
To provide a study of rhetorical skills in alignment with the state core
curriculum. To introduce students to classical authors and readings in
Prentice-Hall's LITERATURE, (bronze edition) and Holt, Rinehart and
Winston's ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE. Students are encouraged to enrich
their study by exploring other works by the authors we will study.
Assignments from ELEMENTS OF WRITING will enhance student's understanding of
the mechanics of writing and grammar.
What will students learn?
Students will accomplish the above goals through a study of:
*Vocabulary with particular attention to word origins
*Conventions of standard English
*Classical literature and its various genres
*Writing as process from discovery writing to finished, polished text
*Authors and their writing/literary devices
What materials are needed daily?
*pencil and dark ink pen
*notebook or section of notebook
*planner
What is our weekly schedule?
Monday: introduction to week's selection
Tuesday: listen to the selection on CD
Wednesday: enrichment/conventions
Thursday: weekly test
Friday: free reading
What are class rules?
1. Be in class ON TIME, PREPARED TO WORK, IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT, WITH ALL
MATERIALS. You cannot go to your locker for forgotten items.
2. Do not bring IPods, electronic toys, calculators, cell phones, food or
drink to class. Water bottles are okay.
3. No late work will be accepted. Use class time to work on assignments. If
you are absent you have two days upon your return to make up missing
work.
4. Contact a class member if you are absent to check on what you missed. I
will help you organize a make-up work schedule when you return to school.
5. Three hall passes are allowed per semester. Students who are out in the
hall miss valuable instruction time!!!
6. Students may re-take tests and re-do assignments if deemed necessary
by Mrs.Thompson. No extra credit work will be accepted.
