RE:           Delayed Opening

New this year, Suffolk Public Schools will consider opening schools on a one-hour or two-hour delay, due to inclement weather, hazardous conditions, power outages, or other emergency situations.  Please share the following information with staff members and parents via newsletters, announcements, meetings, etc.

  • Bus pick-ups for all students -- preschool through high school -- will begin either one hour or two hours later than normal pick-up times, dependent on the announced delayed opening.

  • Elementary students will not be allowed to arrive before 9:30 a.m. on a one-hour delay, and 10:30 a.m. on a two-hour delay.  Staff will not be available to supervise early arrivals.

  • Secondary students will not be allowed to arrive before 8:20 a.m. on a one-hour delay, and 9:20 a.m. on a two-hour delay.  Staff will not be available to supervise early arrivals.

  • “Delayed Opening” means that there will not be any before-school child care at buildings with those school-based programs.

  • Breakfast will not be served on either delayed opening schedule.  Lunch will be served.

  • Dismissal time and after-school activities will remain the same unless otherwise noted.

The "Delayed Opening" announcement will be carried by the same radio and television stations that carry school closure announcements, including WSPS-Charter Cable channel 6.  Announcements will also be posted on the division’s web page (www.spsk12.net) and the Edu-Link automated phone calling system may be activated.
