Mrs. Nash's Discipline Policy
In order for our classroom to run smoothly, we must have a set of standards to
follow. The children and I discuss the importance of expectations, and
therefore we have a set of standards posted in our classroom.
STANDARDS:
The term standard connotates a positive orientation. When a standard is not
met, a helping mentality is engendered, rather than an enforcement mentality.
The use of the term standard also implies consideration for others.
A standard fosters a "We are in this together." Standards
engender student empowerment. They promote teamwork. Standards serve as
expectations, and expectations are responsibility lifting. They tap
into internal motivation and foster commitment, rather than compliance.
(Marvin Marshall)
The following classroom standards connote expectations!
* Do my work
* Have materials
* Be where I belong
* Control myself
* Accept ownership of my choices
* Listen for instructions
* Follow directions
* Speak considerately
* Be prompt
* Honor self and others
On a wall is a chart with a pocket for each child. In each pocket there is a
set of 3x5 cards of various colors: black, yellow, green, blue,white, pink.
Each child's card is placed in the pocket in the above stated order with black
showing at the start of the day. When a child ignores a classroom standard or
school rule, s/he must place the black card to the back of the pile of cards
exposing the yellow card. If there is another problem, then the green card
would be exposed, followed by the blue, white, and pink. The consequences for
the cards are as follows.
Black: Super
Yellow: Warning
Green: 5 minute immediate time out!
Blue: 10 minute immediate time out!
White: 15 minute immediate time out and a call or note to parents!
Pink: Principal's Office!
Students and their teams are also given tickets at various times when they
follow directions, or show that they are trying very hard to do their best.The
tickets are then placed in a green can where I will choose a name at the end
of MOST days (the selected student/s win a prize). The other tickets remain in
the can for the next day's selection. Teams are also rewarded for good
behavior by RECEIVING TEAM POINTS. When a team has earned 10 points, they will
recceive a free recess on a date selected by the teacher!
